The sugar pine is the tallest and largest pine species in the world, and its cones are the longest of any conifer, usually 10 to 20 inches and sometimes more. Each cone takes two full years to ripen. The tree gets its name from the sweet resin that seeps from cuts in its wood, and the naturalist John Muir once called it the king of conifers.
