• Origin: Native to the southeastern US, New Jersey to Florida and west to Texas
• Color: Reddish-brown, oval, with a stiff spine on each scale
• Note: Loblolly seeds flew around the Moon aboard Apollo 14 in 1971. Seedlings grown from them were planted across the country and became known as "Moon Trees."
